This Dover edition, first published in 1972, is an unabridged republication of the Accompanying Paper, “Picture-Writing of the American Indians,” of the Tenth Annual Report of the Bureau of Ethnology to the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, 1888—’89, by J. W. Powell, Director, originally published by the Government Printing Office, Washington, D. C., in 1893. The first section of the original volume, “Report of the Director,” has been omitted in the present edition, except for a few pages referring directly to the Accompanying Paper.

The original edition (Report plus Accompanying Paper) was in one volume. The present edition (unabridged Accompanying Paper and excerpt from Report) is in two volumes.

The following plates, which appear in black and white in the present edition, were in color in the original edition: ⅩⅥ, ⅩⅩ through ⅩⅩⅨ, ⅩⅩⅪⅩ, ⅩⅬⅤ, ⅩⅬⅤⅠ, ⅩⅬⅤⅠⅠⅠ and ⅩⅬⅠⅩ.
