Why Do We Try Harder under Pressure?

We often try harder under pressure because we have some performance-limiting beliefs. For example:

We think trying harder always produces better results.

We think “My best is not good enough. I need to do more.”

But we’re wrong on both points!

In short, these beliefs cause us to view pressure situations as threatening. It’s time to reframe these beliefs. As we mentioned in the previous chapter, the first step in reframing is to pause and recognize your Caveman’s reflexive reactions and beliefs that cause you to think, feel, and act in ways that aren’t helping you. The second step in reframing is to challenge these beliefs.
