1.2.2 Major achievements

After 8 years of poverty alleviation efforts,the number of absolute poverty-stricken population in rural China witnessed a massive decline.According to China’s 1984 poverty line,the number of rural residents who cannot meet basic needs dropped from 125 million[16] in 1985 to 75 million in 1993,with an average of 6.25 million people lifted out of poverty each year.
