How to do it...
Carry out the following steps to install the VMM management server:
- Login as RLAB\vmm-admin or with an account that has administrator rights.
- Browse to the VMM setup folder, right-click on setup, and then select Run as administrator.
- On the Setup page, click on Install and, on the Select features to install page, select VMM management server, and then click on Next, as follows:

The VMM console option will be selected and installed when you select VMM management server.
- On the Product registration information page, type the key and then click on Next.
- On the Please read this notice page, tick the I have agreed with the terms of this notice checkbox and then click on Next.
- On the Diagnostic and Usage Data page, read the notice, and then click on Next.
- On the Microsoft Update page, tick the checkbox ON (recommended) to look at the Microsoft Update Center for latest updates, and then click on Next.
- On the Installation location page, provide the path for the installation and then click on Next.
If you plan to install all VMM 2016 components on the same server, my recommendation is to keep the operating system ( OS) partition ( C:) only for the OS. In this case, you should select another drive for the VMM program files.
- The server will now be scanned to check whether the requirements have been met and a page will be displayed showing us which requirements have not been met and how to resolve the issue.
- As we planned our installation and had all prerequisites already installed, the Database configuration page will be directly displayed.
- On the Database configuration page, specify the name of the server that is running SQL Server. In our case, it is w2k16-sql, as seen here:

If SQL Server is running on the same server, which is not a recommended approach, you can type localhost or the name of the computer (for example, vmm-mgmt01.rllab.com). If the AlwaysOn AG is configured, type the listener DNS name.
- You don't need to specify the port used for SQL communication, unless all of the following conditions are true for SQL:
-
- SQL Server is running on another server (recommended)
- The SQL Server browser service is not started
- It is not using the default port of 1433
- In the Instance name, provide the SQL Server instance, or select the default, MSSQLSERVER.
If the Instance name does not show the SQL instances to select, confirm that the SQL Server Browser service is running and check the inbound firewall rules on the SQL Server.
- Agree to create a new database (new VMM installation) or to use an existing database (for example, a recover situation) and click on Next.
- On the Configure service account and distributed key management page, select the account for Virtual Machine Manager Service.
- If the selection is Domain account, type in the user domain account, in the format domain\user, and the password, and click on Next.
You will not be able (as it is not supported) to change the account after the VMM installation is completed. See the Creating service accounts recipe in this chapter.
- In the Distributed Key Management section, select Store my keys in Active Directory if you have decided to use DKM (recommended approach), shown as follows:

It is strongly recommended that you select to store keys in Active Directory, and it is required when installing a highly available VMM server.
- On the Port configuration page, leave the default port numbers or provide a unique value for each feature, and then click on Next as seen here:

Document and plan the ports before choosing, as you cannot change the ports without reinstalling VMM.
- On the Library configuration page, you can select the Create a new library share option if you want to create a new library share or you can select the Use an existing library share option if you want to use the existing library share, depending upon your requirements. Click on Select to specify the share location:

- Click on Next to continue.
- On the Installation summary page, review your selections. Click on Previous if you want to change any selections.
- Click on Install to start the installation and an installation progress bar will
be displayed. - On the Setup completed successfully page, click on Close.
- Run Windows Update to download and install the latest updates for VMM management server and its console.
