Candidate A
Good morning. I’m Han Lin from Capital Medical University, majoring in Nursing. I’m a sophomore now. I enjoy traveling a lot. It doesn’t have to be a place of interest or a scenic spot. Once in a while I just like to experience something different at somewhere else.
Candidate B
Good morning, dear examiner. First, let me introduce myself. My name is Yang Fan, from Tsinghua University. I’m studying Hydropower Engineering right now. There is not much time left for entertainment to me because of the heavy load of coursework. I miss my football games greatly.

Q: What do you think of the traffic in your city?
高分表达
Candidate A
Traffic in my hometown is never a problem. It is not as densely populated as the first-tier cities, so the traffic runs smoothly in my city. Most people there will choose the buses when going out. You may seldom struggle between offering your seat to others and resting on the seat after an exhausting day because there are always some seats available on the buses.
Candidate B
Now, people would naturally associate Beijing with traffic jam, which seems to be one of the symbols of my city. The traffic situation in Beijing is far from satisfying. With a population of over 20 million and a limited area, the capital city is running overloaded. Whenever you go round the city, whatever you choose—the bus, taxi or your private car, you may get stuck.
亮点表达
densely populated 人口稠密的
available 可用的,空的
the first-tier city 一线城市
overloaded 超负荷的
an exhausting day 筋疲力尽的一天

People living in the large cities suffer a great deal from the traffic congestion, and most people who have ever been to these cities would show understanding for them. Well, it’s no use just complaining, so what can we do to settle the problem?
Considering the huge population of big cities, the most practical and achievable scheme is to boost public transportation, which could make the best of the city road network. Of course, to restrict private cars is also imperative. Now, the first-tier cities, like Beijing and Shenzhen, have employed the system of license-plate lottery. Vehicles in Beijing are restricted one out of five weekdays based upon the last numbers of their license plates. But these restrictions still cannot solve the traffic jam completely. In the end, to speak as a citizen of the city, I appeal to everyone to choose public transportation instead of private cars.
Candidate B
The traffic congestion in big cities has been besetting us for decades. We’ve tried different methods—public transportation, prohibiting private cars, but the traffic situation is still not cheerful. To some extent, the traffic problem originates in the big population. All the ways to facilitate the city traffic only attract more people to the big city then result in a heavier traffic load.
Well, I would like to paint a bigger strategic picture to solve the problem once and for all—scaling them down, in other words, decentralizing and downsizing the mega-cities. People are not appealed by the size of city, but by the opportunities and development space in the big cities. If we could divide the mega-city into different segments—each part with a different function, then people will flock according to their talents and demands respectively. So in the end, we will get several independent districts where people could all live within a 30-min drive.
I know I sound like a dreamer, but I do hope the urban trip will not be a concern in the future.

Candidate A: Good morning, partner! How did you get here today? And did the trip take you much time?
Candidate B: It took me one hour by bus. It’s good enough for me, considering the traffic situation of our city. Then, what means of transportation do you choose usually?
Candidate A: Well, to get around the city, I always choose the public transportation, you know, the buses and the underground, but the transfers are very tiring. Have you got any better ideas for traveling?
Candidate B: Right now, we all get stuck with the old system—either to take the public means or the private cars. Can’t we get something new?
Candidate A: Maybe the future will be a different world. I always fancy a three-dimensional traffic network, like those in the science fiction movies. There would be several layers of flyovers above the ground, which should have enough room for all of us to drive.
Candidate B: So in your ideal future, we all drive our private cars. No offense, but why don’t we dream bigger? When you mentioned the word “future”, I picture myself flying above the city, like the superman, well, not with his cape, but with a jet pack.
Candidate A: A jet pack? That’s too dangerous! But I like the idea of “flying above the city”. Perhaps we will have the “airbus” decades later, then the city buses will be upgraded to city flights.
Candidate B: OK, if the jet pack is too dangerous, the city flights seem possible. Maybe private aircraft will become the mainstream. The city will grow higher and we may all live in the big towers up in the sky, with the personal aircrafts parking in our yards.
Candidate A: That’s so cool. I can’t wait to live in your future world. And besides going up, I think the underground is also very potential. Every time when I take the subway and have to transfer, I find it is both time-consuming and exhausting. Can you figure out any solution for this problem?
Candidate B: I thought about it before. Picture this, when we enter the station, we pick a destination, and then the system will assign us to a certain carriage. Now, can you follow me? Guess what’s the next step?
Candidate A: Wait a second. I guess that when I get into the carriage, I don’t have to step out of it until I reach my final stop. The carriages could be separated and run on different rails to different directions. Am I right?
Candidate B: Smart as a whip! You get my system in a blink. The underground system is also multilayer like those up in-the-sky flyovers. The carriages are controlled by a super computer, and passengers can experience the real “non-stop” ride.

问答
Q: Is a private car a necessity for life?
高分表达
Candidate A
The sales of private cars keep soaring every year, however, in my opinion it’s useful but not a necessity for life, because there are plenty of substitutes for private cars when we go out. In the cities, the buses could almost carry you anywhere you want, and the subway is the fastest vehicle for city inhabitants. You could take a public bicycle ride if you feel like exercising in a pleasant day. What’s more, all of the above can spare you the trouble of parking.
Candidate B
The Chinese have hundreds of millions private cars now. And we are one of the fastest growing car markets in the world. It won’t take long for every Chinese family to own a private car. It is becoming a necessity for life. Private cars bring much convenience to our daily life: in a storming day you can drive your kids to school; in an emergency you can drive your families to hospital; in a beautiful day, you can take your families for an excursion in the countryside with your car.
