The Flowers

Rose Fyleman

The gardner works away for hours

To make the borders gay with flowers.

He plants the bulbs and sows the seeds,

He digs and hoes and rakes and weeds,

And every day has work to do

In winter and in summer too.

But in the Windy Wood I found

The bluebells thick upon the ground,

And in the sloping fields below

Thousands of yellow cowslips grow;

And yet to tend them there is none

Except the wind and rain and sun.
